January 2014 Newsletter! New Video, Columbus show this Friday!

2014-01-newsletter-photo-600

Here’s hoping 2014 is treating all of you well thus far! Meet Yuengling. That’s her favorite spot in my bedroom. I think she likes to watch the records spin. But hey, who isn’t a fan of a vinyl record rotating at 33 1/3 RPMs?!

Since my last newsletter, Kino323 released a live video of me performing It’s Been A Real Hard Year while in Des Moines back in June. I was touring through Iowa with Dena Dena Dena and had just opened up for the amazing Dick Prall. Easily one of my favorite nights from 2013. CLICK HERE to watch the video. The original version of this song can be found on my 2010 album Breaking, which also features my friend Adam Ollenforff. You may have seen Adam playing pedal steel behind Kacey Musgraves on The Grammy’s Sunday night. No big deal.

For my neighbors here in Ohio, I’m happy to announce that my first show of 2014 will be this Friday night, January 31, at Kafe Kerouac in Columbus! I’ll be sharing the stage with two amazingly talented musicians, Briar Rabbit from Chicago and Ashley Brooke Toussant from Cleveland. Music at 8pm, $5 cover, all-ages. CLICK HERE for more details. Join us! Bring a friend! See live music! Smile!

Thank you again for your support and love. Looking forward to sharing more shows and new music with you in the coming months!

Earnestly,
Mike Reeb

Fall 2013 Newsletter (Living in Ohio, Dan Hubbard, Upcoming Shows in IL, IN, OH, KY, GA!)

2013-10-newsletter-photo

Hello everyone!

My friend Dan Hubbard invited me to open up for him in Bloomington, Illinois for his Livin’ in the Heartland album release show last month (picture from the show). It was the largest audience I’ve played to all year, and Dan and his band absolutely killed it on stage! He is a fantastic songwriter and definitely the kindest musician I’ve worked with over the past ten years. Thanks to this new fad called the “Internet,” you can stream songs from Dan’s new album here or purchase the album on iTunes. Trust me, it’s worth your time and money.

On a different note, after ten months of touring and 95 shows throughout the country- from New York to Los Angeles and everywhere in between- I decided to put my roots down in the great city of Columbus, Ohio. My dog (Ray) and I have everything we could ever need or want in a city, even more so than San Francisco, Portland, or Chicago. I’m less than three hours from Indianapolis, a days drive from New York City, and can catch the amazing Hoo Doo Soul Band every Sunday night. What more do you need?!

My first show since moving to Columbus will be this coming Tuesday, October 22 at Rumba Cafe where I have the privilege of opening up for Dick Prall. We shared the stage earlier this year at Gas Lamp in Des Moines, Iowa. Although I’m excited to perform at Rumba, I might be more excited just to hear Dick Prall live again! Here are all of my upcoming fall dates, cities, and venues (click here for more details):

Oct 22 – Columbus, OH – Rumba Cafe w/ Dick Prall, Jason Myles Goss
Nov 1 – Indianapolis, IN – Foundry Provisions
Nov 2 – Urbana, IL – The Iron Post (Folk & Roots Festival) – early show
Nov 2 – Terre Haute, IN – The Verve – late show
Nov 3 – Bloomington, IN – Rachael’s Cafe
Nov 8 – Augusta, GA – M.A.D. Studios
Nov 15 – Augusta, GA – Public House Show
Nov 16 – London, KY – Brie’s Brews

REAL TALK: Even having played so many shows in 2013, it’s been a struggle to make ends meet financially. In the coming months, I plan on touring a lot less and picking up another job to help pay the bills. Though not ideal, it’s definitely necessary at this point. But with a bit more income- and finally being able to sleep in my own bed for longer than a few days at a time- I plan on writing and recording new music this winter. Time to get these ideas worked into songs!

Settled in the EST,
Mike Reeb

This November, I’m going to be touring through the southeast (Georgia, Carolinas, Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky) and am already starting to book shows along that route. Click here to see what cities I plan on hitting. If you have any leads, suggested venues, or living room/house show ideas for those cities, please let me know. Any input or help you can offer goes a long way!

“November? What about September and October?” Good question. The short answer: writing brand new music for an upcoming album or two. I’ll share more about that in my September newsletter. Until then, I look forward to seeing some familiar faces and meeting new friends this month. If you can’t make it out to a show, stay in touch online via Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Peace & best,
Mike Reeb

P.S. Did you know I released a Beatles cover album back in 2009? It’s FREE to download and available at beatles.mikereeb.com. Give a listen, burn a CD, tell a friend!

Hey everyone! Many thanks to Peyton for the photo from my show at Rockwood Music Hall in New York and to everyone who either came out to a show in May or helped spread the word online. What a great month of touring and reconnecting with friends! After playing 17 shows in May, it feels like the 12 shows this month will be a piece of cake. Okay, not really. But I’m still excited to get back on the road- especially since I’ll be making my way back to Los Angeles, The Pool in South Bend, The Frequency in Madison, Tonic Tavern in Milwaukee, and Mike ‘N Molly’s in Champaign. May 2013 Newsletter (I’m going east! Maria Davey Photography!)

mike-reeb-675

Greetings from Indianapolis! Last month at this time, I was near San Diego, getting ready to tour up the west coast. But before I reached Pacific Standard Time (that’s my Pete Krebs shout-out for my friend Jeremy and cousin Suz), my fellow west coast road warrior and professional photographer, Maria Davey, and I stopped at several places along the way to take photos (including some amazing landscape shots that she’ll be posting on her website soon). Just a few days into our trip, we were driving through Texas and found an abandoned gas station. So we explored the property, found an old truck, and I was lucky enough to come away with some great promotional photos (see above and photos.mikereeb.com). I’ve worked with a lot of photographers over the years, but Maria Davey’s work stands out as some of the best portrait work I’ve seen. If you need a photographer, get in touch with her! She’ll fly anywhere in the world to shoot, and she is incredibly wonderful to work with. Take a look at her work and learn more about her on her website: mariadaveyphotography.com

Between April 2 and May 4, I visited 14 different states via car (3412 miles), train (460 miles), bus (1252 miles), and plane (1259 miles). It was an amazing trip but only because of other people! Thank you again to everyone that I met or came across over the last month. To those who bought me a meal, put me up for the night, cooked me dinner, came to see me play, let me nap in their house while they were at work, told a friend about my music, drove me to a venue, or hosted a house show, thank you thank you thank you! I may have lost money on this tour, but I could care less. I came away with so much more and can not wait to visit the west coast again!

This month, I will make my way to the Atlantic Ocean for shows in Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and New York. Looking ahead, I’m so excited to let you know that my show this Friday night (May 10) in Indianapolis will feature Rebekah Osborn, who sang with me on my albums Breaking and Without The City Lights, and also Dave Evans, my old drummer and current Buster Eagle drummer. Here are all of my upcoming dates, cities, and venues (more details):

May 17 – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – PULSE House w/ Get In The Ark
May 18 – Philadelphia, PennsylvaniaLooking for a House Show

May 25 – South Bend, Indiana – Main Street Library
May 27 – South Bend, Indiana – The Pool w/ Families & Mim Stoner
May 28 – Muncie, Indiana – Be Here Now
May 29 – Newport, Kentucky – Southgate House Revival

I’m currently booking house shows and backyard BBQ shows for July, August, and September. No destination is too far! Email me if you have any questions about house shows or if you think you might want to set something up. And seriously- I’ll travel anywhere in the states to play in your living room.

Lastly, just a reminder that all of my music is available online for free. If you enjoy my music and want to help me keep moving forward, please consider sharing my Bandcamp Page with your friends, families, enemies, and frenemies on Facebook, Twitter, Napster, America Online Chat Rooms, and Prodigy (remember that?!!). The music is there… and your people are there… connect ’em! It really goes a lot farther than you’d think. See you on the road, my friends!

Earnestly,
Mike Reeb

April 2013 Newsletter (West Coast Tour! Couches Needed!)

Alongside the Grand Canyon, April 2013

Greetings from California! And yes, that’s a photo of me standing along the Grand Canyon. Last Tuesday, my friend Maria and I packed up her car and started traveling west. Now that we’ve hit the coast, I’m getting ready to play a string of shows in California, Oregon, Colorado, Nebraska, and Chicago (via Amtrak, MegaBus, and Greyhound) while Maria makes her way up to Canada in her car over the next several weeks. It has been an amazing trip, and I feel so blessed to be able to combine my work with the opportunity to explore the United States. My job may not pay that well, but the perks are definitely worth it right now.

In just six days, we hit 10 states and explored the Gateway Arch, Oklahoma City, Amarillo, Santa Fe, the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, and San Diego. Along the way, we captured a lot of photos via Instagram (@mikereeb and @mariaedavey). If you have the time, browse/creep through our photos from the last week! Here are a few of my favorites:

Maria and I in the car
My favorite structure in the US, the Gateway Arch
Abandonded truck in Texas
Roadside exploring in New Mexico
My feet on a huge red rock in New Arizona
The elk I came across just after sunrise at the Grand Canyon
Getting pretty close to the edge of the Grand Canyon
Bryce Canyon, Utah | one more | okay, last one
My reaction to everything in Las Vegas

As of today, I have played 37 shows in 2013. Tomorrow night, I’m excited to play my first of four shows in California (not including two house shows)! Two days later, I make my Los Angeles debut at the famed Hotel Cafe. If you know anyone in the LA area, please help spread the word! The show is $10, and my set starts at 7pm sharp. On my way back through the Midwest, I have a show in Omaha on 5/2 and in Chicago on 5/4. My show at Uncommon Ground in Chicago will be my last in the area for a while, so come on out and bring a friend or two. It’s one of my favorite rooms to play, and it’d be great to see you! Here are all of my upcoming dates, cities, and venues (more details):

Apr 11 – Ventura, California – Zoey’s Cafe
Apr 13 – Los Angeles, California – Hotel Cafe
Apr 17 – San Francisco, California – Brainwash Cafe
Apr 18 – Sacramento, California – ZuhG Life Store
Apr 27 – Portland, Oregon – The Arbor Lodge
Apr 30 – Denver, Colorado – The Meadowlark
May 2 – Omaha, Nebraska – Barley Street Tavern
May 4 – Chicago, Illinois – Uncommon Ground on Clark

While touring, I typically stay with friends, family, and ‘friends of friends’ in different cities. It saves me so much money and is actually the only way that I’m able to make ends meet. As of right now, I have lodging set-up in most cities. However, I’m still looking for a couch to crash on in San Francisco on 4/16 and 4/17, an enclosed porch to sleep on in Sacramento on 4/18, and a floor to sleep on in Omaha on 5/2. Have any friends or family in those cities that might be able to put me up for a night? If so, please let me know. I’d be happy to offer you a free house show in exchange for your help. Seriously!

Last but not least, I’m getting everything finalized for my 17 shows in May throughout Nebraska, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and New York. Even though the month is coming together really well, I’m still looking for house shows or coffee house gigs in Philadelphia (5/18 or 5/22) and Cleveland/Toledo (5/24). Looking to June, I’m also hoping to find some house shows or coffee house gigs in Iowa (6/5 or 6/6), Minneapolis (6/7, 6/8, or 6/9), Eau Claire/Wausau (6/10 or 6/11), and Milwaukee (6/17 or 6/18). Have any leads? Any help goes a long way.

Thanks again everyone, and please stay in touch over the next month via Twitter and Facebook. While definitely exciting, the road can get lonely from time to time. See you soon!

Earnestly,
Mike Reeb

March 2013 Newsletter

March is here, and it’s finally starting to warm up! Anyone else excited?! I spent the better part of yesterday walking around Indianapolis without a jacket, and it was so nice. Here’s to bikes, music festivals, sunglasses, front porch time, and lemonade stands! Soon, soon, soon.

Since December 2012, I’ve played eight house shows and have another one coming up in West Lafayette this month. As an independent musician better suited for small, intimate venues, I am always looking to play in more living rooms. Have you thought about hosting a house show? Your friends would dig it, and it would help introduce my music to a new audience in a unique way. The video above is from a recent house show and will give you a sense of the vibe (you can also click here to watch it). Keep in mind that I’m willing to travel anywhere and that no microphones, amps, or speakers would be used. Easy, right?! Email me at contact@mikereeb.com if you might be interested in hosting a house show or if you have any questions. Thanks for your consideration!

I’ve got some great show over the next two months, including shows in Louisville, Nashville, Los Angeles, Ventura, Sacramento, Portland, and Omaha! Here are the dates, cities, and venues (click here for more details):

Mar 14 – Louisville, Kentucky – Phoenix Hill Tavern
Mar 15 – Nashville, Tennessee – Listening Room Cafe
Mar 16 – Nashville, Tennessee – Cause A Scene
Mar 22 – South Bend, Indiana – The Pool
Mar 24 – West Lafayette, Indiana – House Show
Mar 25 – Muncie, Indiana – Be Here Now
Mar 29 – South Bend, Indiana – Chicory Cafe
Apr 11 – Ventura, California – Zoey’s Cafe
Apr 13 – Los Angeles, California – Hotel Cafe
Apr 17 – San Francisco, California – The Meadowlark
Apr 18 – Sacramento, California – ZuhG Life Store
Apr 20 – Willow Creek, California – House Show
Apr 28 – Portland, Oregon – The Box Social
Apr 30 – Denver, Colorado – House Show
May 2 – Omaha, Nebraska – Barley Street Tavern

If you have friends or family in any of the cities I’m touring through, please help spread the word however you can. Word of mouth goes a long way and helps me in more ways than you know. Thanks again, have a great week, and I hope to see you at a show soon!

Earnestly,
Mike Reeb
